With the implementation of programs like CSA, the trucking industry has become one of the most transparent industries in North America. All the information associated with these programs are posted on line for everybody to see. There is literally no where for violators to hid anymore. Robert Moseley - Head of Transportation Industry Group of Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP details out some of the data available to the public.

Is this level of transparency good for the industry?
CSA strives for safety excellence. Any organization that strives for this undoubtedly benefits and likely exemplifies this approach in other areas of their operations. Dangerous and poorly run fleets tarnish the reputation of the industry and brands of successful companies. CSA is meant to weed them out and allow the well run companies to thrive.
What new type of information is being put up on the website?
Essentially all the data has been publicly available in the past but simply was not easily accessible and you had to know what you were looking for. Now it can be readily accessed by anyone in the public and it is 100% searchable. Information like enforcement cases are listed out going 4-5 years back and can be searched by state and by carrier. The amount of fines carrier's have to pay is also listed. This type of transparency and access to data will continue to grow. As a fleet you need to be increasingly vigilant and ensure you are meeting the requirements of the respective enforcement agencies. Paying a fine does not make the violation go away.
Should we worry about so much information being online?
Rob that statment is not true even if you are complyent in every way they can and will write you just for the money or because there having a bad day or there wife gave them a hard time or they need the money for the city coruption is coruption and its what we as drivers put up with every day you cant stop it with laws or inforcement it will still steal peoples jobs and not help the industry get the bad drivers off the road there are more out there now then ever in my 38 yrs as a driver
You need to be 100% completely aware and you need to make every member of your entire fleet equally aware. It is a matter of shared corporate responsibility. If you use CSA as a safety management tool and integrate a philosophy and culture and safety then there is nothing to fear. However, running an operation that does not respect the safety of your employees and the general public will highlight this for all to see.
