Family Company Corporate Culture

Big Truck TV

Ventura Transfer Company, a family-run company for over 135 years, discusses how they transferred the "Mom and Pop" culture of their family run business into a corporate structure more in keeping with the $15,000,000 company they had grown into. By formalizing their culture of respect in a "Culture Document," they were able to keep the best aspects of who Ventura was, and marry them within a more structured framework, creating a jumping off point which would inform all decisions

How did you get all the employees to buy into this culture of respect?

Right from the very beginning we started putting together presentations, discussing all the questions that any employee would have of a supervisor, manager or leader and already give them the answers so they don't have to ask themselves. We also created what we call a Culture Document. The Culture Document was set up after we struggled a while with how to achieve a great place to work. We had a goal of becoming a great place to work and that meant different things to different people. So after we talked about it for a while, we decided that it would be best to write it down in one document.
What makes ours different is that we assign behaviors to our values. We organized a group of team members to go through our values and ask them to discuss how they were going to uphold that value system. So if you have a value of trust and respect, treating people in a dignified manner, how are you going to behave day in and day out to uphold that value? It's one thing to have it plastered on the wall and try to impress people. It's another thing to actually live it. We're trying to live our values. And our culture document is the life blood of our "great place to work" environment.

What are the main features of your corporate culture?

Respect! Having a culture of respect translates to the customer in that it builds a strong commitment among team members and team members are more passionate about serving a customer if they feel strongly that they're a part of a well functioning team and that they're a valued member of the team.

What is the biggest challenge in transforming a company from being a family business to one with a more formalized corporate culture?

The greatest challenge to implementing a corporate philosophy is commitment. You cannot lose sight that you have to remain focused. Day in and day out. There are always activities that are distracting you from remembering what you're trying to achieve; the big picture.
Our business is one where we believe in people. I know it's a clich? to say that your people are your number one asset. But it's different to believe it and to show the attitude. We believe that we've got that attitude and we live the fact that our people are number one. No matter how hard you want to try to please your customer, if you don't have your people understanding how they're gonna service that customer and believing in themselves and believing in the company, you won't get the level of service that you aspire to.

What would you describe as the key characteristics of a family-run business?

Respect, caring for others, involvement in activities outside of the business, realizing that you work to live you don't live to work are all philosophies that typically go hand in hand with family run businesses.
