Are electronic driver logs still a tough sell?EditorMark Haslam
We think that the jury is still out on electronic driver logs and electronic on-board recorders. We do see a lot of companies really liking the technology because it really helps their drivers be more efficient with their time – especially new drivers who need to learn how to do a paper log; they don’t have to do that.
They can come in and in just a few short hours they can understand completely how to do their logs over the computer because the computer does the hard parts of the log for them. 1

How does the electronic version compare with the paper log book?EditorMark Haslam
It truly replaces the paper log because it’s an analogy to paper – you still see the same graphs that drivers and law enforcement officials are use to seeing on a paper log. The federal government, the FMCSA, has strict requirements of what you have to do to have an electronic on-board recorder. 1

What do the drivers themselves think of electronic driver logs?EditorMark Haslam
Drivers really seem to be appreciating the warning a half hour or an hour before their out of drive time and they need to pull over. Prior to electronic on-board recorders that just wasn’t possible. 1

Are the trucking companies seeing the benefits of this type of software?EditorMark Haslam
We’ve been pleasantly surprised to see that trucking companies, even without a mandate from the federal government, are starting to roll it out. They’re seeing the benefit in their drivers performing to the letter of the law; they’re seeing safety departments having to worry less about violations; they’re seeing accidents being reduced, they’re seeing accidents not being caused by violations; they’re seeing accident reconstruction and post-accident investigations becoming much easier; they’re seeing data retention savings as the paper logs are now being store in electronic databases, so it’s interesting to us that even without that federal mandate I mentioned earlier, so many large trucking companies are highly interested in electronic driver logs. |
